Guide lines for the submission of articles

We are pleased to receive articles for consideration for publication on historical, traditional and contemporary aspects of woodfiring and wood-fired ceramics, including aesthetics, technical, kiln design and construction/firing, personal perspectives, the culmination of practical research, clay bodies, slips and glazes, wood-fired soda-glaze, wood-fired salt-glaze. When sending an article we would appreciate if you would let us know whether it has already been, or is due to be, published elsewhere. We generally prefer to publish original articles.

Articles should generally be between 1000 - 1500 words in length, however, we do occasionally publish longer articles. If you have an idea for an article, please contact us in the first instance to discuss your proposal, or send us a first draft, and we can take it from there. The quickest way to send your written text is as a Word.doc or docx, attached to an e-mail.
We prefer first person writing, and consider that the best person to interpret personal development is the artist/potter/woodfirer themselves. We avoid wherever possible using the critic as writer, especially one from outside of the field.
In terms of writing about a new kiln design or a recently built kiln, we have one proviso: that the kiln has been fired successfully at least twice. This is for several reasons, primarily because we have a responsibility to our readers (who have been known to re-build their kilns based on information published in The Log Book - so it has to work). This also gives an opportunity to fine-tune the kiln, and to include the resulting additional information in the article - which makes for a more interesting and informative read.

Professionally taken images are always welcomed. However, if you take your own, they should be of the highest quality - approximately 3800 x 2600 pixels or greater, at 300 dpi.

•  Set your camera to take the highest resolution of image possible - JPG, TIFF or RAW file
RAW files are always best to work from
•  ISO: 80 or 100 (the lower the ISO the better the quality of image)
•  Aperture:  f /11  -  f /16  -  f /22
(the higher the f -stop setting, the greater the depth of field, making more of the image in focus)
•  Shutter speed will be calculated by camera light meter - the type and intensity of the light source
•  It is best to use a tripod to keep the camera steady, as at slow shutter speeds it is impossible to hand-hold a camera
•  When considering your image composition remember to leave a good margin of space around the work being photographed, rather that filling the frame with the work. The space left around the work allows for a greater flexibility of placement within an article layout, when considering images for publication

Send the images as downloaded from camera, without compression. (Please do not bump up the specifications in an image editing software such as PhotoShop.)
These specifications are quite high (and will create large file sizes), but allow us to consider suitable images for the front cover and also full page reproduction within an article, where possible. Smaller image files as used in blogs or web sites, while they may look good on screen, however, do not contain sufficient digital image information required for reproduction by four colour off-set-litho printing, such as is used in printing TLB.
Please send at least 10 images (including kiln plans where relevant) to illustrate your text, together with photo captions. Also remember to credit the photographer.

Sending Images
Once you have selected all the images you wish to send, place them in a new folder, named with your article title. Compress and save the folder as a zip file as follows:

Select the folder
Go to Finder > File (drop down menu) Compress
A new compressed (Zip) folder will be created in the same location.

Right-click the folder, point to Send to, and then click Compressed (zipped) folder. A new compressed folder will be created in the same location.

Once saved, up-load the ZIP file via a free file sharing site such as DropBox, WeTransfer or MailBigFile remembering to include our e-mail address in the details, so that they can send us a link in order to down-load your file/files.

As a publication supported only by subscription (we do not include any advertising), we offer authors a complimentary subscription in return for published articles. Additional copies of the magazine in which their article is published may be purchased by the author at a reduced rate.
